NFL Division Realignment: AFC

I thought I would do a division realignment of the AFC in the NFL this week. I will do the NFC next week. This is based on geographic location and interesting new division rivalries that I want to see exist. This realignment may not work to the fullest extent, but I just wanted to see the AFC in a potentially new way.

Here it goes:

AFC North: Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts.

Some key points:

  • All four places are geographically close
  • Tyrod on the Browns vs Buffalo would be happening twice per season
  • If Andrew Luck gets and stays healthy, this could be the Colts division
  • On the other hand, the Browns can become the kings of the division in several years if the other teams are still rebuilding
  • The Bills may have more respect for the Bengals, since it was the Bengals that got them in the playoffs in 2017

AFC South: Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles Chargers

Some key points:

  • A new in state rivalry between the Jags and Dolphins if the Dolphins get their act together
  • I moved the Chargers to the South, this may not make geographical sense, but I wanted to experiment.
  • The Jags and Titans can continue their new, ignited rivalry.
  • This could realistically be a three-team division title race for the foreseeable future.
  • Chargers offense vs Jags defense twice a season

AFC East: New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets

Some key points:

  • Sorry Jets, the rebuild will be tougher in this division
  • Steelers continue their division rivalry with the Ravens
  • Steelers will face their arch nemesis Patriots twice a year, and the division title race will be exciting to watch with both teams in the same division and one having to go a wild card
  • Patriots will have a tougher time winning the division with Ravens and Steelers
  • Who wins the AFC could come down to who wins the division between the Pats and Steelers

AFC West: Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos

Some key points:

  • Mahomes vs Watson could become a classic
  • This division is anyone’s to take
  • Texans vs Broncos: showdown of the defenses
  • Texans vs Chiefs: showdown of the offenses
  • Can the Raiders grasp this division right away with them having the most experienced QB?
