Best Comedians to Appear on Talk Shows
In an era of Netflix comedy specials, many are flocking to the renowned streaming service to enjoy some great stand-up comedy from high profile comics such as Aziz Ansari, Gabriel Iglesias, and Iliza Shlesinger. This is understandable, as they are proven talents, but there are also other comics who are just as hysterical, and are looking for their own Netflix Special. Some stand-up comedians appear on national talk shows to promote themselves, and there have certainly been some gems. These comedians provide no less smirks than their more recognized counterparts, and their jokes are equally witty and hilarious. Here are some rising, funny comics to appear on well-known talk shows:
Mark Normand
Mark Normand is a frequent guest on many big name talk shows. He has appeared on the shows of Jimmy Fallon, Conan, Stephen Colbert, and James Corden. Normand’s persona depicts him as down on his luck and helpless in life. He always seems to be striking out with the ladies and in some sort of inner conflict with himself. Despite his issues, he is a very mellow dude with witty jokes that poke at society, and is very relatable to audiences.
Sebastian Maniscalco
Though he is off doing bigger and better things today, Sebastian Maniscalco has appeared on talk shows to display his clever jokes. He appeared on the talk shows of Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan. His persona is very laid back, and his various facial expressions/very slow voice give an edge to his jokes and punchlines. Sometimes, the tendency to enunciate certain phrases or prolong a facial expression can leave a lasting laugh in the audience, something Maniscalco is very skilled at.
Rachel Feinstein
Rachel Feinstein is no stranger to talk shows, with appearances on Jimmy Fallon, Conan, and James Corden to deliver her numerous sets. Feinstein is spot on with her imitations, which strengthen her jokes. She delivers relatable content to audiences, with topics including relationships, both family and romantic.
Sam Morril
Sam Morril has made appearances on various talk shows such as the ones of Jimmy Fallon, James Corden, and Conan. His jokes are very well thought out, and his mellow voice adds to the effectiveness of his jokes. He also includes topics like Feinstein, such as romantic/family relationships, making his jokes relatable to audiences.
Alingon Mitra
Alingon Mitra is a comedian whose biggest breaks came when appearing on the talk shows of Conan and Stephen Colbert. Mitra’s comic routines involve various imitations to lighten the mood and incorporate as a strategy in his routine. Even when using imitations, Mitra uses a calm voice to act them out, and his sets are very calmly spoken. His jokes on the talk shows are very clever and his soft voice adds a bonus element of relaxing the audience.
Nick Griffin
Nick Griffin is a middle-aged comic simply living life. He has appeared on the talk show of Conan several times, along with Stephen Colbert’s show. Griffin’s tactic to instigate laughs out of his audience is through an emotionless persona. This comic is not overly excited, emotional, or nervous when delivering jokes, and utilizes a different strategy to evoke smirks out of his audience. He tells jokes in a blunt way, and it goes to show how strong his jokes are as he does not include many gestures or facial expressions.
Comedy is an oasis from stress. Many comedians try to relate to their audiences by joking about everyday life. Sometimes, the best routines are more than just comics spitting words at an audience. It’s like acting, with a pre-written script, the need to have a persona and tone, and showing emotions when necessary. Though comedians who have appeared on talk shows are not necessarily global sensations, watching some of their amusing sets can be a perfect remedy for stress in the busy life of a college student.
